Privacy notice

Written from the code that does it. Every statement below describes what this site actually does today, and it is updated when the site changes rather than afterwards. If anything here does not match what you experience, tell us and we will correct it: hello@noirdeck.dev.
This notice covers noirdeck.dev, the website. It does not describe the noirdeck software itself, which runs entirely on your own machine and sends us nothing.
What we collect
Only what you type into the sign-up form:
- Your name and email address, so we can confirm the address and tell you when noirdeck is available to install.
- Your company, if you choose to give it. This field is optional and stays empty if you leave it empty.
- Whether you asked for release emails, and the date and time you asked.
We do not collect your IP address, your browser, your location, or anything about how you use the site. There is no analytics on this website and no advertising. We set no cookies.
Your download key
When you verify your address we issue a download key and email it to you. We store ithashed, never in clear, so a read of our database is not enough to obtain the software. Each time the key is used we record which key took which version, and when, and nothing else: no address, no browser, no location. That record is what lets us tell a licence holder from a copy of a link, and it is the only place a key is ever checked. The installed software does not use it and does not contact us.
Why we hold it
To send you a verification code, to issue and send your download key, and to know which licence holder downloaded which version. Only if you ticked the box, we will also email you when there is a new release. We rely on your consent. We will not email you about anything else, and we do not sell, rent or share your details with anyone.
Where it is stored
- Cloudflare hosts this site and the database holding sign-ups. The database is provisioned in Cloudflare's Oceania region.
- Amazon Web Services (SES) delivers the email, from the Asia Pacific (Sydney) region.
Both are processors acting on our instructions. Email necessarily travels across networks we do not control in order to reach you.
How long we keep it
Until you ask us to delete it, or until we no longer have a reason to hold it. Verification codes are different: they are stored only as a one-way hash, expire after fifteen minutes, and are destroyed the moment they are used.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, and under the UK and EU GDPR where those apply to you, you can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete it;
- stop emailing you, which you can also do from any message we send.
Email hello@noirdeck.dev and we will action it. You do not have to give a reason. If you are unhappy with how we handle a request you can complain to the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner, or to your local supervisory authority in the UK or EU.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Credentials for sending email are held as encrypted secrets and are not in our source code. Access to the sign-up database is limited to the people who operate the service.
Changes
If we change this notice we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will email you before it takes effect.
